What is Aeropress?

The Aeropress was invented in 2005 by the company “AEROBIE” which is full of the knowledge of air pressure and other physics technology.

The father of Aeropress Alan Adler wanted to brew a cup of coffee so that he could enjoy one cup of coffee every morning but the major coffee machine at that time was a family brewer which brews 4 or 5 cups of coffee at one time.

As a serial inventor, he started thinking about solving this problem by himself; which turned into millions of sales record product “Aeropress”.

It is my favorite coffee equipment, and since I have been using it for a long time, I would like to spread my love towards Aeropress through blog articles.

To extract delicious coffee with the Aeropress, there are several other necessary equipment besides the Aeropress, so I will briefly introduce them below.

By the way, Aeropress is really good for beginners to start with because...

Let's take a look at the detail together.

1. A Coffee Scale

Coffee Scale is the one with the black flat look.

First, you need a scale that can measure in 0.1g increments.

This is used when extracting coffee and measuring the weight of coffee beans. We recommend the HARIO coffee scale.

2. A Cokking Thermometer

You should measure the water temperature when you brew coffee, so you would like to have one.

Knowing the water temperature is the path to extracting a great cup of coffee.

3. Any kind of a grinder or a handmill

It is important to grind coffee beans just before drinking.

Powdered coffee beans are convenient, but powdered coffee beans have more surface area for oxidation, so the taste does not last long.

Hence, you need a tool (called a handmill or a grinder) to grind coffee beans.

I will discuss the details of the grind in another article. If you don't know the details about the grind, please refer to the article "All about Porlex coffee grinder setting and review"

4. A Coffee Kettle

It is possible to extract coffee even if it is not dedicated to coffee, but if possible, it is desirable to use a kettle dedicated to coffee.

HARIO's stainless steel kettle is inexpensive and highly durable.

You can use it both by gas and electric heating source.

5. Freshly roasted coffee beans

Yes, forget about the supermarket.

You should go to the local coffee roastery and ask the barista "What is the best of today?"

I suggest that you should always choose the coffee beans roasted by the small coffee roastery because a small-size roastery tends to be very strict about quality control so that you can fully trust their coffee.

How to brew coffee with Aeropress

To use Aeropress, there are two methods: the standard method and the inverted method.

Beginners want to start from the standard method, so I will explain how to use the standard method.

If you are interested in the inverted method, please refer to another article that I will publish later on.

Name of each Part

Lower left side: Lid

Upper left side: Plunger (Used when pressing)

Lower left side: Paper filter (specific one for Aeropress)

Upper left side: Body

Now, let's talk about the relationship between roasting level and extraction temperature.

Relationship between roasting level and extraction temperature

Extracting the temperature of coffee varies depending on the level of roasting; meaning how deep the roasting level is.

You want to remember below extraction temperature.

Light roast: 90-93℃
Medium roast: 88-90℃
Dark roast: 85-88℃

The reason that you want to measure the extraction temperature is very similar to ordinary cooking.

You do not grill, meaning adding the heat, the chicken which is already well grilled, right?

If you don't know the level of roasting, you can always ask the barista honestly, "What is the brewing temperature?"

Recipe for Hot Aeropress Coffee

Here's what you need to prepare when brewing hot coffee with Aeropress.

  • Coffee beans 16.5g
  • Hot water
  • A grinder / hand-ground mill
  • A scale (measures weight)
  • A timer (can be a built-in smartphone app)
  • A paper filter

Adding a total of 260cc of hot water to 16.5g of beans is the ideal ratio.

  1. Pour hot water about 40cc and stir 4 times
  2. Bloom for 30 seconds
  3. Add 220cc hot water
  4. Attach the plunger and start pressing
  5. Total brew time target is 2:00 - 2:30

Recipe for Iced Aeropress Coffee

Here's what you need to brew iced coffee with Aeropress.

  • 25g of coffee beans
  • Hand grinder or grinder (medium grind)
  • Coffee Kettle
  • Aeropress
  • Paper filter
  • Ice cube

Adding a total of 190cc of hot water to 18g of beans is the ideal ratio.

  1. Put ice cubes into the cup
  2. Pour hot water about 60cc and stir 4 times
  3. Bloom for 30 seconds
  4. Add 130cc hot water
  5. Attach the plunger and start pressing
  6. Total brew time target is 2:00 - 2:30

When you brew with this "Quick-freezing method", please make sure that each coffee drop goes onto the ice cubes so that the extracted coffee liquid is frozen immediately not to lose any aroma or flavor.

How to clean Aeropress

After extraction, if you turn it upside down like this, not a single drop will spill out.

When you wash Aeropress, I suggest you wash without a washing machine.

Even though Aeropress is made of plastic which is heat and shock-resistant, you want to avoid any unexpected accident caused by a washing machine.

Summary

Aeropress is Great coffee equipment that can satisfy both beginners and advanced baristas.

I will post the articles about Aeropress and the basic knowledge about coffee weekly, so if you're interested in those two topics, please stay tuned.

I hope you'll have a wonderful cup of coffee today.
